Preventing Fleas & Ticks

Fleas and ticks are a common problem for pets. Just walking outdoors is an opportunity for a flea to hitch a ride on your pet. Once inside your home, the flea reproductive cycle can cause an infestation in your carpeting, upholstery, and bedding. You can choose from a wide range of flea control products to protect against fleas. Similarly, a walk in the woods can expose your pet to ticks, which attach themselves to the skin. These tiny insects carry diseases that can sicken your pet. Our veterinarians can help you choose the right flea and tick prevention method for your pet’s needs.

Internal Parasites

Internal parasites, like roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms, can be transmitted when your pet is in contact with the feces of an infected animal, or even when in contact with feeding bowls or toys. An animal with internal worms may not show any symptoms in the early stages, but gradually, the worms begin to undermine the animal’s health. Our veterinarians can test for these internal parasites and provide appropriate medication to prevent further infestation.

Heartworm Prevention

Heartworm disease is caused by a parasite that is transmitted by the bite of a mosquito. Tiny worms are carried via the bloodstream to the lungs and heart where they grow and reproduce, undermining your pet’s health. If left untreated, heartworm disease can result in death. Heartworm disease is expensive to treat, and the treatment is not always successful.

The best way to protect your pet is by providing heartworm medication. The medication is available as an oral tablet, administered monthly, or as an injection that protects for six months. Our veterinarians can provide medication to prevent the transmission of heartworms. We will be happy to answer any of your questions about heartworm prevention and treatment.
